Meet Paula Holliday, a transplanted media exec who trades her stilettos for garden clogs when she makes the move from the big city to the suburbs to start a gardening business. Paula can handle deer, slugs and the occasional human pest - but she's not prepared for the mummified body she finds while restoring the gardens at Halcyon, a local landmark.

Casual snooping turns serious when a body is impaled on a garden tool and one of Paula's friends is arrested for the crime.

Aided by the still-hot aging rocker who owns the neighborhood greasy spoon, a wise-cracking former colleague, and a sexy Mexican laborer with a few secrets of his own, Paula digs for the truth and unearths more dirty business the town has kept buried for years.
Called "quirky, original and captivating" by award-winning mystery writer Carolyn Hart, Pushing Up Daisies is the first in the Dirty Business Mystery series featuring amateur sleuth/gardener Paula Holliday.

Pushing Up Daisies The Dirty Business Mystery Series Book 1 edition by Rosemary Harris Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

Paula is working hard to establish her gardening and landscaping restoration business and takes on the major chore of restoring the gardens at Halcyon. She tackles one section to start and uncovers the remains of a baby. That leads to a number of questions regarding the sisters who lived in the house and whose baby this might be. While trying to get some answers, she discovers a girl went missing many years and has to wonder if the two are connected. Paula, her friends Lucy and Babe, and Sergeant Mike O'Malley (who happens to cook) set to work to solve two forty-year-old mysteries, only to end up with another murder on their hands. Unfortunately, Paula's landscaper is the prime suspect. This only spurs on her involvement. If you can ignore some of the inconsistencies and "poetic license", this is an interesting story and the major characters are likable and well developed. Those who enjoy gardening will enjoy the descriptions of the gardens.

This is the first in the series and I hope that Paula, "MOM", and Lucy at least return in the THE BIG DIRT NAP (Dirty Business Mystery Series #2). The third in the series is DEAD HEAD, the fourth, SLUGFEST.

Pushing Up Daisies The Dirty Business Mystery Series Book 1 edition by Rosemary Harris Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

When Paula finds the long dead body of an infant after she gets the job of clearing and updating the grounds of the estate of elderly sisters who had died. she finds herself deep in the mystery of whose child this was, what happened to the mother, and, when a much-too-friendly man is killed, who did that? There's mystery aplenty (and late nights ahead for whomever starts reading this book).
Pushing Up Daisies was a very enjoyable book! The characters were fleshed out enough that you got an idea of who they are but not so much that there isn't still a lot to learn about them. I'm not one to spend a whole lot of time trying to figure out the answers to the mysteries in books but I do give it some thought. Given the relatively few characters in a story it can be quite easy to deduce the bad guy but I was wrong, wrong, wrong with my choice. This was a nice surprise! As the book didn't contain any sex this story is suitable for most readers.
For some reason I've never been much of a mystery reader, but that may change after reading Rosemary Harris' debut book. "Pushing Up Daisies" was a fun book to read for many reasons, not the least of which is the wonderful writing style of the author. The pace of both the writing and the story move along at a brisk clip, making for an intriguing story that builds to what I thought to be an entirely unpredictable yet credible climax. The book's main character is a delightful and energetic person whose persistent inquisitiveness drives the story line by bringing life to the personal interactions that are such a vital component of the book. In short, I enjoyed every page of "Pushing Up Daisies" and I'm eagerly looking forward to the next installment in this promising series.
A cozy mystery set in Connecticut. The protagonist, Paula Holliday lost her media job. She settle in Springfield opening a garden business. The descriptions of the garden are great and add much to the book. There several sub plots that are not fused together and at times I had go back and read it again.
Paula is offer the job of restoring a garden for Historical Society. As she is digging in the white garden Paula locates
a skeleton of a baby. There are many turns and twists in the book before the answer is found. This is the first book in the series and I well read her again.
We meet Paula Holliday, a landscape gardener early on when she finds a baby's preserved body in a garden she has been commissioned to restore. The mystery starts when she tries to find out who the baby is or who the baby's mother was. Ms Harris writes very well and I gather that she knew a considerable amount about flowers, plants and things biological in nature. The book was fascinating since it was set in Connecticut and I was familiar with a lot of the various flora that was mentioned. As the mystery deepens, Paula is trapped in a nursery hothouse among other misadventures all in all, a nice comfortable book which I thoroughly enjoyed.
I enjoyed this cozy mystery and the diverse set of characters presented in the story. The main character, Paula Holliday, wins the bid to rejuvenate the Halcyon Gardens after the death of the last of two sisters living on the property. But while exploring to gauge the work involved, she uncovers the mummified remains of a baby buried in a box. This leads Paula to snoop around trying to discover the baby's identity and that of its mother. Was it born to one of the sisters or someone else with a secret to hide? The mystery definitely twists and turns throughout the story, keeping the reader guessing. My only complaint is it did tend to drag a little at some points, but all in all an entertaining mystery.
I expected a run-of-the-mill cozy, shallow, pleasant, not very well written. I got a smart, well-crafted mystery with great characters speaking good dialog. I would definitely read further in the series if I didn’t have a huge pile of books already waiting to be read. Few of them will be better than this one. I’ll remember Rosemary Harris. Good writer, storyteller.
